From Continental Grids to Smart Homes: Challenges and Opportunities in the Energy Transition

On 12 August 2026, the Swiss-Latvian Smart Energy Digital Center (part of the LACISE project) hosted the webinar From Continental Grids to Smart Homes: Challenges and Opportunities in the Energy Transition, bringing together experts from Switzerland and Latvia to discuss key developments shaping the future of energy systems.

The webinar examined the energy transition from two interconnected perspectives: the evolving European electricity grid and the growing role of smart energy solutions at the household level.

The first presentation, "The Continental European Power System: Current Landscape, Challenges, and Pathways Toward a Sustainable Future," was delivered by Dr. Rafael Segundo from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). The presentation provided an overview of the Continental European power system and explored the increasing complexity of operating a grid that is rapidly integrating renewable energy sources. Using recent examples from across Europe, including major system disturbances and blackouts, Dr. Segundo highlighted the challenges and opportunities of building a more sustainable, interconnected, and resilient electricity system. 

The second presentation, "EnergySmart Challenges in Latvia's Residential Market," was delivered by Egils Trumpe, Head of B2C at Ignitis Latvija. His presentation focused on changes taking place in Latvia's residential energy market, including the growing impact of renewable energy generation, evolving electricity consumption patterns, and the increasing need for active consumer participation in energy management. The presentation also showcased emerging approaches such as personalized tariffs, digital forecasting tools, smart integrations, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging solutions that can help households contribute to a more flexible and efficient energy system.

The webinar was organized within the framework of the Swiss-Latvian Smart Energy Digital Centre, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration in smart energy technologies and sustainable energy systems.
