What do Latvian scientists do in battery research?

The interview, filmed during Battery Industry Day, features researchers from the Institute of Solid State Physics at the University of Latvia, Gints Kučinskis and Gunārs Bajārs, who highlight their work on lithium- and sodium-ion battery materials, with a focus on improving performance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency. Key topics include sodium-ion batteries as a resource-abundant alternative, solid-state batteries as a safer next-generation technology, and future concepts such as lithium-air batteries.

Why does Latvia need to develop its own battery industry? What are the biggest challenges facing battery technologies today – and where can Latvia make a real impact? In this short video filmed during #BatteryIndustryDay on February 25, representatives from two innovative Latvian companies share their perspectives:
🔹 Aleksandrs Parfinovičs, NACO Technologies
🔹 Jānis Birznieks, BlueShockRace

What does it take to build a competitive battery industry in Latvia – and in Europe? In this video, we explore the current state and future potential of Latvia’s battery sector, highlighting why batteries are becoming critical infrastructure for the energy transition, electric mobility, and a zero‑emission future.
 The interview was recorded during
Battery Industry Day, held on 25 February 2026 at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, as part of the LACISE project. The event brought together researchers, industry, and policymakers to address one key challenge: how to move beyond a “chicken‑and‑egg” situation and turn collaboration into concrete technological and industrial capacity.

We’re excited to share our very first video with highlights from the kick-off event of the LACISE project — a pioneering collaboration between Switzerland and Latvia dedicated to advancing sustainable energy solutions and inspiring youth in STEM fields.

On May 6, 2025, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia hosted the LACISE kick-off event, bringing together key officials, industry leaders, and researchers to share their vision for a greener, more resilient energy future.
